How to Care for Your Bermuda Grass
Bermuda grass is tolerant to heat and drought but still requires proper care. This includes regular mowing in order to maintain an ideal height between one-and-a-half and two-and-a-half inches. Below are details about each topic.
Mow
- You should aim for a height between one-and-a-half and two-and-a-half inches.
- You can start mowing in the spring once the grass turns yellow.
- Keep your grass blades trimmed to a minimum of one-third.
- Always use a mower blade that is sharp.
- Avoid bagging unless you’re scalping for the first spring mower.
Water
- Only irrigate as required.
- Water deeply once a day, tossing the soil to about six inches.
Aerate
- Prior to fertilizer application, aerate early in the summer.
Weed Control
- Apply pre-emergent herbicides in spring and summer after winter injury.
- Apply post-emergence products to control broadleaf weeds. Always read the label.
- Maximum of two to three herbicide applications per year
Fertilize
- Proper fertilization starts by performing a soil test. Next, the results of the soil test are used to determine the nutrients that should be applied. This is a complex task that requires extensive knowledge. We can help.
